CA for Science Students: Who Can Start After Class 12?
ICAI does not restrict the Foundation course by stream. Your CA eligibility after 12th comes down to four points:
- Registration with ICAI’s Board of Studies comes first. Provisional registration opens once you pass Class 10.
- Class 12 comes next. You appear in the exam, and ICAI makes your admission regular only after you clear it.
- Four months of study must pass between your registration and the exam month.
- Age does not matter. ICAI sets no limit.
CA Foundation After 12th: What the Exam Looks Like
ICAI holds this four-paper exam in January, May and September. Papers 1 and 2 are written. Papers 3 and 4 are multiple choice, and each wrong answer costs you 0.25 marks. Every paper carries 100 marks.

How to Register for the Foundation Course
CA Foundation registration runs online through ICAI’s Self Service Portal at eservices.icai.org.
- Create your student login on the portal.
- Fill in the Foundation form with your Class 10 and Class 12 details.
- Upload your documents.
- Pay the fee the portal shows.
- Note your registration date, because your four-month clock starts there.
Keep these documents scanned and ready:
- Class 10 admit card or certificate showing your name and date of birth
- Class 12 admit card or marksheet
- A recent photograph
- Your category certificate, if you apply under a reserved category

You reach Intermediate by clearing Foundation, though graduates can also enter it directly. Intermediate covers Advanced Accounting, Corporate and Other Laws, Taxation, Cost and Management Accounting, Auditing and Ethics, and Financial and Strategic Management. Final goes deeper into financial reporting, advanced financial management, advanced auditing, direct and indirect tax, and integrated business solutions. If you clear each level on the first attempt, expect about four and a half to five years in total.

Every science student pursuing CA hits the same doubts sooner or later.
Is Maths compulsory?
ICAI does not ask for Maths in Class 11 or 12. Paper 3 tests basic maths and statistics. PCM students start ahead, and PCB students catch up with steady practice.
Does a science background make CA harder?
It makes CA different, not harder. Your gap is vocabulary: debit, credit, asset, liability. A few weeks of daily practice closes it. Your habit of solving numericals step by step pays off in Papers 1 and 3.
How do you move from science to accounting?
Treat the accounting equation like a conservation law. Every entry changes both sides by the same amount, so the books always balance. Learn journal entries and ledgers first, then build upward.
How to Prepare for the Foundation Exam Alongside School
Start with ICAI’s own study material and free live classes, and read the syllabus before anything else. Begin with Accounting and Maths, since both take the longest to build.

Give yourself about two hours on school days and four or five on weekends. Study one subject per sitting so nothing blurs together.
ICAI publishes mock test papers, revision test papers and past question papers on its Board of Studies pages. Solve them under exam timing. Write Papers 1 and 2 by hand. For the MCQ papers, track how many marks your wrong guesses cost.
